About
Kiryu's signature summer festival runs for 3 days in the city center and attracts visitors from all over Gunma and beyond; in 2026, its sixty-third year, 490,000 people came. Yagibushi music is at the heart of it, with the All-Japan Yagibushi Contest, Dance Yagibushi with free choreography to tunes built on the Yagibushi melody, a children's contest and the Kiryu Yagibushi dance contest. For shopping, head to the textile bargain market, where Kiryu fabrics sell below usual prices. The Kiryu Gion Festival's mikoshi procession also takes place. Records of the Gion festival go back to 1656, and 6 large Gion float-stages built between the Edo and Showa periods still survive.
