About
Every August 14 and 15, the Ojima district of Ota holds a neputa festival that started in 1986 out of the city's historic ties with Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture. About ten glowing neputa floats move down the Ojima shopping street to cries of "Yaa-ya-do!", among them fan-shaped floats as tall as seven meters, along with ranks of neputa drummers. The brightly painted warrior pictures lit up against the night sky are impressive up close, and the climax comes when the drums and festival music all play at once. A Tsugaru products market also opens. Free shuttle buses run from Kizaki Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line during the festival. It is cancelled in severe weather.
