About

Known locally for generations as "Ogyon," Numata's big summer festival involves the whole city and draws over 200,000 people each year. It formed in 1970 when the Edo-period Gion festival of Suga Shrine merged with a commerce and industry festival held by the city and the Numata Chamber of Commerce. The star is the Tengu Mikoshi: two giant tengu masks made into portable shrines and carried by around 300 women. The mikoshi of Suga and Haruna shrines reach their peak on the final night, and mando floats, decorated with figures and carrying musicians, tour the town. Neighborhood and children's mikoshi perform together, and the thousand-person street dance is open to anyone who wants to join.
