About

For 2 days each summer, central Takasaki hosts a festival that has nothing to do with any shrine or temple; it exists simply so residents can join in and have fun. It began in 1975 as the Takasaki Furusato Matsuri, a homegrown event started by the local Junior Chamber, and took its present name in 1985. Floats, mikoshi and fireworks are the three big draws: many floats travel the streets, Takasaki's own giant daruma mikoshi and creative daruma mikoshi parade through town, and a large fireworks show fills the night sky. There are also taiko and traditional arts performances and a skills fair. The 2026 festival was the fifty-second. Central roads are closed to traffic during the festival, so take care if driving.
