About
The autumn festival of Kotohiki Hachimangu in Kanonji revolves around chosa, drum floats that here are a size bigger than in nearby areas. Nine of them, one per district, are shouldered through town to the shouts of their bearers, each trying to outdo the others in power. Things begin with Friday's eve festival, and the chosa enter the shrine on Saturday and Sunday; on Saturday night, fireworks burst over the lit-up floats. The shrine is called a god of victory because Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have prayed here for success in the Genpei War. Kanonji has 118 chosa in all, and district chosa festivals keep the city drumming throughout October.
