About
In the Toyohama district of Kanonji, this autumn festival prays for plentiful harvests and catches. Its focus is the chosa, enormous drum floats dressed in gold-thread embroidery, shouldered through the streets by bearers in happi coats with full-throated chants. Seeing twenty-odd of them gathered in one spot is the festival's signature moment. The first day brings shrine visits to Hachiman Shrine and a tour of the town; on the middle day the floats line up at Hachiman Shrine and then perform the "kakijo" at the Wada festival plaza. On the last day a portable shrine travels by boat from Minoura fishing port, and every chosa converges on Ichinomiya Shrine for the "kakikurabe" carrying contest, the peak of the festival. The Chosa Kaikan in Toyohama explains the floats' history and construction.
