About
This bon dance festival around Fujisawa Station's north exit and Yugyo-ji Temple takes its theme from the temple's tradition of dancing while chanting the nembutsu. Day one, in front of the station, features the Yugyo-bayashi street dance and Fujisawa's newly created Yugyo Odori, plus guest dancers bringing the real Gujo Odori, Nishimonai Bon Odori and Koenji Awa Odori. On day two a yagura tower is set up in the temple grounds for a big bon dance to live song and drums, with favorites like Tanko Bushi and Tokyo Ondo; anyone can step into the circle, and food stalls line the grounds. The dancing nembutsu is said to have started in the Kamakura period, when the itinerant monk Ippen's followers broke into dance mid-chant and the crowd joined them, and it is seen as one root of bon dancing.
