About
Hiratsuka's signature summer event is a Tanabata star festival that began as a wish for the city's recovery after wartime destruction. The main attraction is the oversized, glittering decorations hung above the street, about 100 of them along Shonan Star Mall and Beniya Pearl Road by the north exit of Hiratsuka Station. Roughly 100 street stalls set up on Tokaido Hondori, and shops near the station sell food and drinks too. On the morning of the first day, a thousand-strong Tanabata dance parade moves through the streets. Local performers take the stage at the Hirashin Hiratsuka Arts Hall, and event booths are set up in Mitsukedai Park. The festival is organized by a committee of the city, chamber of commerce, shopping street federation and tourism association.
