About
Over 2 days in late July, the harbor town of Manazuru celebrates the annual festival of Kibune Shrine, a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property built around rituals on the water. The mikoshi portable shrine is carried out to sea by boat, accompanied by decorated kobaya boats, oared kaidenma, boat songs, flower floats, Kashima dances and festival music. The shrine's founding story tells of a light seen night after night off the Kasashima (Mitsuishi) rocks, and of a boat bearing a sacred image that an old man named Hirai took in and enshrined; the festival is thought to retrace that tale. People here call it a festival of repaying kindness, praying for safety and good returns in fishing, shipping and the stone trade. Expect an eve-of-festival program, fireworks offered to the shrine and night stalls.
