About

In summer, Awa Odori dance troupes make their way through the shopping streets east of Yamato Station, dancers in vivid costumes moving to gongs and drums. Local troupes are joined by invited groups from Tokushima and from Koenji in Tokyo. The event started small in July 1977, run by a shopping association near the station, and has since become known as one of the three great Awa Odori festivals of the Kanto region; 2026 was its 50th edition. A drop-in troupe called niwaka-ren lets anyone join in rather than just watch. The streets are right outside Yamato Station.
