About
Each July, the grounds of Kawasaki Daishi Heikenji fill with wind chimes gathered from all over Japan; 2026 saw its 31st fair. About 800 varieties hang in rows, and their clear ringing drifts around the temple, a welcome break from the summer heat. Chimes come in metal, ceramic and glass, and you can pick out ones to take home, including the temple's own daruma chime said to ward off misfortune. The fair attracts visitors from far beyond the neighborhood. It is about 8 minutes on foot from Kawasaki-Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line, and is run by the local tourism association and the shopping cooperative on the temple approach.
