About
Kami City is where Tosa uchihamono, Kochi's traditional hand-forged blades, got their start, and each autumn the city celebrates them at Kagamino Park. Knives and tools made by local smiths are shown and sold, and a corner where blacksmiths sharpen blades on the spot always draws a crowd. On the lawn stand the entries in the Yamada Scarecrow Contest, with the prize-giving held right there. The festival is also the Monobe venue of the Tosa Harvest Festival, so food from the Monobe River valley is on hand, and at a paid barbecue plaza you can grill rare Tosa akaushi beef over charcoal. Sister towns Shakotan in Hokkaido and Awara in Fukui bring their own products and stalls, and there are yosakoi naruko dances and a sword-drawing demonstration.
