About

Sakihama Hachimangu in Muroto holds its autumn festival on the Sunday before Sports Day each October. The lion dances, niwaka and other pieces offered to the deity are designated together as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kochi Prefecture under the name Ancient Rites of Sakihama Hachimangu. Don't miss the niwaka: improvised comic plays passed down since the Edo period, laced with sharp jabs at society, which have attracted attention well beyond Kochi. The national government has also selected niwaka as an intangible folk cultural property that should be recorded. It is a close-up look at performing arts kept alive by the people of Sakihama, right in their own town.
