About

Around the mid-autumn full moon, central Hyuga holds an autumn festival known locally as "Jugoya-san." These days the attractions are the decorative mitate craft displays and flower-covered floats offered to the shrine, and a parade of dance troupes and others through the city centre, with the whole town in festive mood. It is counted among the three great festivals of northern Miyazaki and of Hyuga. The festival began as the rites of Tomitaka Hachiman Shrine. Legend says that about 800 years ago two warriors, Nasu no Yoichi and Kudo Suketsune, chasing Heike survivors who had fled to Shiiba after the Battle of Dannoura, invited the deity of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura and built the shrine to raise their troops' spirits. Local people later kept the festival going to pray for good harvests and give thanks for the crops.
