About

Miyazaki City's great autumn festival is affectionately called "Jinmu-sama." Two processions pass by: a sacred procession led by a lion, with the imperial palanquin and a line of costumed children, and a festive parade featuring Okiyo-maru, an ancient-style ship linked to Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, and the bridal "Miss Shan-shan Uma" on horseback. They travel from Miyazaki Jingu along Tachibana-dori to the Oyodo otabisho. In the evening, Takachiho-dori becomes the Jinmu-sama Plaza. The festival is said to have started when townspeople, living too far from the shrine to visit easily, asked that the deity come out to them at least once a year, and it took its present shape around the late Meiji era. Expect road closures on the day.
