About
Kushifuru Shrine in Takachiho holds this long-established autumn festival. After the ceremony, a sacred procession with kagura performers, staff-fighting (bojutsu) groups, children's portable shrines and dance troupes makes its way through town. From late afternoon comes the dedicatory sumo tournament, a village-shrine tradition said to go back 350 years, with bouts for elementary, junior high and high school students and adults. There is also unari-zumo, in which toddlers aged one to two are placed in the ring, a heart-warming sight. Families can sign up for unari-zumo on the day, free of charge. Food stalls are set up in the Takachiho Shrine parking lot. The festival goes ahead in light rain, and roads around the route are restricted during the procession.
