About
Obi in Nichinan, often called the "Little Kyoto of Kyushu," holds this autumn festival over a Saturday and Sunday every October. Obi was a castle town of the Ito clan, and the festival reaches its 49th edition in 2026. Make a point of seeing Taihei Odori, a dance handed down since the Edo period and designated an intangible folk cultural property of Miyazaki Prefecture. Dancers wear dashing Genroku-era dress: big woven hats trailing red cords, loose kimono, and a long sword and inro case at the waist. Day one, centred on the Obi Castle ruins, features galloping horses and Taihei Odori performances. On day two, a historical parade of samurai generals, women warriors and a "Miss Princess," joined by Taihei Odori and other folk performers, makes its way through the old streets. The parade is cancelled if it rains.
