About

Tashiro Shrine in Misato keeps an old-style rice-planting festival said to date back about a thousand years to the Heian period. It is held every year on the first Saturday and Sunday of July. The big sight is people, cattle and horses getting covered in mud in the paddy as they pray for a good harvest. Rites called gyuba-ire and mikoshi-ire ask for good health and plentiful crops, and the festival is an intangible folk cultural property of Miyazaki Prefecture. Beyond the rites, the Ondasai-no-Sato Fureai Hiroba hosts stage events, and a local food market brings together regional specialties and dishes. On Saturday night, about 1,200 fireworks go up over Misato.
