About
Timed with the summer lantern rites of Kanbashira Shrine, Miyakonojo's guardian shrine, this is the city's signature summer festival. On the first evening, the eve festival, huge lantern floats glowing with light leave Yasaka Shrine and make their way through town into the grounds of Kanbashira Shrine, a fine sight against the night streets. The main day opens with the Okage drum, about 2.5 m across, being beaten as an offering, followed by a lion dance and the opening of a sake barrel. Then a spirited procession of portable shrines covers the roughly 1 km from Miyakonojo Station to the shrine. Children and adults dance to flutes and drums, and true to the festival's name, a thank-you for every blessing, the whole city comes together.
