About

Oura Shrine in Yorishima, Asakuchi, holds its grand festival each autumn, and its big draw is the kurabeuma ritual featuring sacred horses. A ceremony usually takes place on the first Saturday of October, with the horse ritual the next day, Sunday, and the Junikake ritual in the early evening. The custom is said to have begun when Hosokawa Michitada, of the Ashikaga shogun's clan, moved the shrine here and added 40 sacred horses to its procession; horses have been offered to the procession ever since. In fiscal 2019 (Reiwa 1), the main hall, worship halls and torii gate were registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
