About
Over two autumn days, Katsuyama in Maniwa hits its peak of excitement with the festival of the Takata, Koo, Ichinomiya and Suzu shrines and Gyokuun-gu. Decorated danjiri floats run through the old castle-town streets to cries of "Oisaa!" and clanging bells, then smash into each other head-on and shove for position, which is what kenka danjiri means. On the first day the floats escort portable shrines around town before clashing at night; on the second they make their rounds in the afternoon and collide again in the evening. An eve festival is held the night before. When watching, stay outside the barricades and off-limits areas.
