About

On October 15 each year, at the autumn festival of Funakawa Hachimangu Shrine in Niimi, a procession of men bearing weapons marches ahead of the portable shrine. Also called the "daimyo procession," it winds through the area around the shrine and Niimi Gotenmachi. It is said to have started in 1697, when Seki Nagaharu, newly made the first lord of the Niimi domain, ordered his men to guard the sacred procession, and it is said to have 300 years of history. On the eve, October 14, the Yutate ritual opens the autumn festival.
