About
Kuroshima, an island in the Yaeyama group, holds its harvest festival around the sixth lunar month; locally it goes by names such as Pooli. The Taketomi Town Tourism Association counts it among the grandest events on the island, and says Miruku appears and various performing arts are offered to the gods. The big moment is the paarei dragon boat race between villages, in which uuni, fast runners chosen by each village, take part. Sacred rites on the Taketomi islands are scheduled by the lunar calendar and the zodiac, so the date moves every year; in 2026 it was August 2.
