About
On August 24, children ride flower-decked floats around the Ooro district of Okuizumo, drumming and singing in this traditional musical procession. Each float (now a truck) carries 10 elementary school children, the boys in kamishimo with crowns and headbands, the girls in kimono and flowered hats; they beat drums and shake rattles in time with the songs. Adult flute players walk alongside, and the three groups compete with one another as they make their way through Ooro. The custom is old but once died out completely; around 1975 young people of the district brought it back in its original form with guidance from elders, and now the whole community holds it.
