About

Every year from August 14 to 17, the Tsukinowa Shinji fills Yasugi with flutes and drums and is the heart of this summer festival. A float leads the procession with a lantern shaped like the tsukinowa as its sacred object, and children shout "Enya, enya, dego, dettoya!" as they go. The story comes from the Izumo Fudoki, an ancient record of the region: after a wani, a sea creature, killed a man's daughter, he prayed to the gods and took revenge, and the villagers made a spear-like weapon called the tsukinowa, like the one that killed the wani, and kept dancing to console the girl's spirit. The 2026 program also included fireworks at Yasugi Port on August 8 and neighborhood events.
