About
Ogamiyama Shrine's Okunomiya on Mt. Daisen holds a midsummer rite that carries water and a healing herb from near the summit to the gods, running from the night of July 14 to the morning of July 15. Said to be more than 1,000 years old, it is a Tottori Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It opens with an evening ceremony at the Okunomiya on July 14. Before dawn on July 15, after a hot-water purification, priests and lay attendants head up the mountain and hold a summit ceremony in the stone chamber on top at about 5 a.m. The sacred water and hitotsuba-yomogi gathered at a pond near the peak are then offered at the main morning ceremony back at the shrine, where the herb is shared out among worshippers. The evening ceremony is open to everyone; to follow the climb, apply to the Okunomiya beforehand and bring gear suited to hiking through the night.
