About
Sakaiminato, home to one of Japan's biggest fishing ports, started this summer festival in 1946, shortly after the end of the war. The day begins at Daiko Shrine with prayers for safe seas and full nets. Don't miss the sea parade, when fishing boats from Mihonoseki loaded with a portable shrine and drums cruise along the Sakai Channel. Back on land there are portable-shrine parades and stage events, and at night roughly 2,000 fireworks go up, their thunder rolling across to the Shimane Peninsula on the far shore. Around the same time, handmade lanterns carrying the wishes of local schoolchildren and others drift on the channel. Earlier editions have also opened a coast guard patrol ship to visitors and featured the Sakaiminato Tairyo Daiko drummers.
