About
Akasaki, a fishing district of Kotoura Town, celebrates the annual grand festival of Kanzaki Shrine every July 27 and 28. The first night is the eve festival, with fireworks fired from the breakwater; from the nearest viewing points you are only about 150 meters away, close enough to feel the bangs and see the colors mirrored in the water. On July 28 comes the boat procession: around 20 fishing boats, each with its own role, carry the portable shrine, priests and red-and-white banners out of Akasaki Port and loop around the sea off the town, asking for big catches and safe voyages. Food stalls set up around the harbor, and some years the tourism association accepts requests to ride along on the procession.
