About
Isshiki-kazari is a decorative tradition of the Hosshoji area of Nanbu Town, displayed each April around the time of the local cherry blossom festival. The rule is one material per piece: only pottery, only lacquerware, or only bamboo ware, arranged to depict the year's zodiac animal, a famous theatrical scene or a recent craze. Originally part of the sagicho (tondo) bonfire rites, it now continues as an event of the cherry festival. Each piece is assembled by a team, and in the past the results were said to forecast the year's harvest. The rows of finished works have a simple, homespun charm. Nearby, cherry trees line the riverbank for about 2 km around the Hosshoji castle ruins, ideal for a blossom walk afterward.
