About
Ube Shrine in Tottori City's Kokufu district, honored as the foremost shrine of old Inaba Province, saves its most important celebration for spring. The eve festival is on April 20 and the main rite on April 21, while a grand procession takes place on the Saturday or Sunday nearest April 21. The Kirin lion dance offered here is a stately performance by a one-horned lion, a style mostly found in the Inaba area, and is said to have started some 350 years ago; shrine maidens also perform the Urayasu dance. On procession day a large portable shrine sets out, joined by warriors in armor holding green bamboo and by yakko footmen whose dance preserves the look of the Tottori domain's journeys to Edo. In 2026 the procession took place on April 19, the eve festival on April 20 and the main rite on April 21.
