About
Every April 15, the banks of the Kamanashi River at Ryuo in Kai City host this festival, one of the three great Miyuki processions of Koshu. The spirits of three shrines of old Kai Province, Ichinomiya Asama Shrine, Ninomiya Miwa Shrine and Sannomiya Tamamoro Shrine, gather at Ryuo, and a mikoshi is carried along the Shingen Embankment before a flood-control rite at Sanja Shrine. Sanja Shrine stands where the procession ends; tradition says it was established so that the deities of the three shrines could cross to this spot and pray for protection from floods. The embankment itself is said to have been built by Takeda Shingen to hold back the floodwaters of the Kamanashi River, and the neighboring Shingen Embankment Park has cherry blossoms in spring.
