About
Kofu holds this festival most years to honor the memory of Takeda Shingen, the renowned Warring States general. The big event is the Koshu Gundan Shutsujin, re-creating Shingen's army setting out for the Battle of Kawanakajima against Uesugi Kenshin; more than 1,000 people take part dressed as samurai, billed as the world's largest samurai procession. First, on a special stage in Maizuru Castle Park, Shingen, Yamamoto Kansuke and the Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda gather to stage the pre-battle ceremony, and then the army advances into central Kofu along Heiwa-dori and other streets. The ranks are made up of 4 corps named Wind, Forest, Fire and Mountain after the famous Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan motto, plus the headquarters unit. Parades, food, sports and cultural performances add to the buzz of Kofu in spring.
