About
Minobusan Kuonji, head temple of the Nichiren school, holds the Oeshiki in memory of its founder, Nichiren. Over 3 days, recitation services of gratitude and the great Oeshiki memorial rite are held in the Founder's Hall. The evening of the middle day brings the Mando Neri Kuyo, when bamboo mando lanterns decorated with washi cherry blossoms advance from the Somon Gate to Kuonji to the music of drums, flutes and bells. It recalls the legend that when Nichiren died, cherry trees bloomed all at once out of season and his disciples said their farewells beneath them. About 2,000 people are said to join from across Japan, and at night the mando offering ceremony is held twice in front of the main hall.
