Post anonymously where you are (mur)
For when you want to say what’s on your mind, right here, without a name attached. On murmur these short notes are called murs. A mur sits on the map where you wrote it and disappears when its time runs out.
Write a mur
- Tap “Murmur” at the bottom right of the map. Make sure the switch at the top is set to “mur”.
- Type in the “What’s on your mind, right here?” box. Up to 140 characters.
- To add a photo, tap “Take a photo”. Only photos taken in the app can be added — you can’t pick from your library. Photos are public, so be careful about people and places in the frame.
- Choose the “Location shift” and “Disappears in” settings (explained below).
- Tap “Murmur” to place it on the map.
Wait 20 seconds between posts. Posts are checked automatically before they go public.
Choose how far to shift your location
Your device shifts the location of a mur before it is sent. There are nine settings — 0 m, 10 m, 25 m, 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 300 m, 500 m and 1 km — and the default is 50 m. The app remembers the last one you used.
The actual shift is somewhere between half of the distance and the full distance. Pick 100 m, for example, and the mur lands 50–100 m away. Only at 0 m is the mur placed exactly where you are.
If your device only shares your approximate location, the app warns you before posting that the position may be off by a few kilometers.
Choose how long it stays
Use “Disappears in” to choose, in one-hour steps: 1 to 48 hours on the free plan (24 hours by default), or up to 7 days with murmur Premium. Afterwards you can still use “Change lifetime” on your own mur, or “Delete” it at any time. The text itself can’t be edited.
Replies, favs and translation
- Replies: open the thread from a mur and reply (up to 140 characters). No names are shown: the author is marked “Poster”, and everyone else gets a letter (A, B…) that only applies to that mur. If you don’t want replies, turn off “Accept replies” when you write.
- Favs: you can fav other people’s murs. Only the count is stored, not who tapped it. Murs with a few favs glow softly on the map and in lists.
- Translation: murs in another language show a “Translate” button. Translation happens on your device and the text is never sent to an outside service (iOS 18 or later on iPhone).
If you see something bad
Use “Report” on the mur and pick a reason (violence or threats, hate or discrimination, sexual content, child safety, exposes personal information, spam or advertising, risk of self-harm or harm to others, or other). We review reports within 24 hours. “Block” hides each other’s murs and marks; you can undo it from “Blocked people” in Settings.
