About
Launched in 1985 by the local junior chamber as a festival for all of Miyako’s residents, this event is now run by a committee of participating groups and fills two days in late September. Lavishly decorated boat floats roll through the city centre, competing to be the most beautiful, while residents follow with hand dancing. The spirited chants you would expect from a fishing-port festival echo through the streets, and you can feel the townspeople’s deep bond with the sea. The parades run from early evening into the night, and a festival plaza and stall area open from midday. Everything is just a few minutes’ walk from Miyako Station on the JR and Sanriku Railway lines.
