About
This autumn festival centres on the float procession of Morioka Hachimangu, an Iwate Prefecture intangible folk cultural property. Tradition holds that it began in 1709, when townspeople celebrated the completion of the Nanbu domain's castle town by offering elaborate district emblems to the shrine and parading through the streets for three days. Each float presents one scene on its front (furyu) and another on its back (mikaeshi), and drums and festival music fill the streets as they pass. Highlights include the procession setting off from the shrine gate, the evening grand float parade from Morioka Castle Ruins Park along Odori, and horseback archery in the shrine grounds.
