About

The town of Yamada in Iwate celebrates autumn with the grand festivals of its two shrines, Yamada Hachimangu and Osugi Shrine. Each shrine holds an eve-of-festival rite followed by its main festival, and a sacred procession makes its way along a set route through the streets. Because the two shrines’ festivals follow one another a day apart, the whole town is in a festive mood for several days. Meanwhile Chuo Park turns into a festival plaza: it opens with a ceremony, and the stage features local nursery and kindergarten children as well as traditional folk performing arts, with festival stalls set up around the grounds.
