About
Omura Shrine in Hidaka Village opens its greatest treasure to the public only once a year, on the day of this autumn festival. The sacred object is a straight sword with its mounting, made at the close of the Kofun period, and it is one of just three National Treasures in all of Kochi Prefecture. The shrine itself was traditionally ranked second in the old province of Tosa, after Tosa Shrine in Kochi City, and you reach it along a straight, tree-lined approach leading off the main road. Right behind the main hall towers the sacred Botan-sugi, a cedar said to be more than a thousand years old; its lower branches carry ordinary cedar needles, while the upper ones are said to sprout leaves that look like peony flowers. Come on festival day to see both the sword and the tree.
