About
Every year in mid-November, Izuta Shrine in the Maehama district of Nankoku holds an autumn festival you will recognize at a glance: local men and boys with their faces painted white, dressed head to toe in white, shoulder the portable shrine and pound drums as they make their way around the neighborhood. The shrine is said to honor a female deity, and it is believed to protect against beriberi. Wait along the route and you will hear the drums well before the white-clad procession comes into view.
