About
Ichijo Shrine in the Nakamura area of Shimanto holds this grand festival over three days, and it has been a lively affair ever since the shrine was founded in 1862. On the first evening, a lantern parade carrying the sacred fire winds through town and climbs to the shrine for the eve rites. Day two brings a chigo procession of children walking from Gion Shrine to Ichijo Shrine, Hata kagura and Tsunoyama kagura on the kagura stage, and the drums of Tosa Nakamura Ichijo Taiko. Through the festival, lanterns lit from the sacred fire glow on the shrine steps and grounds while stalls line the streets, so an evening visit lets you enjoy both.
