About

Tsunoyama Kagura belongs to the Tsunoyama district, which today spans the towns of Tsuno and Yusuhara, and parishioners perform it at their autumn festivals to pray for good harvests and good health. The repertoire has 11 unmasked dances and 6 masked ones that act out Japanese myths, and the movements are so numerous that a complete performance takes about eight hours. It is said to date from 913, when Fujiwara no Tsunetaka arrived from the capital, began settling the area and started worship at Mishima Shrine. Shrines in the Kitagawa, Takano and Hoshono districts host performances on different days, so match the date to the shrine before you go.
