About

Matsumoto has danced to its festival song "Matsumoto Bonbon" every summer since 1975. Traffic is cleared from the city-center streets, and one dance group after another moves through town. At its 52nd edition in 2026, 152 groups with about 7,900 dancers took part, watched by about 45,000 people. Things start in the early evening with an opening ceremony on Chitose Bridge in Honmachi, and the dance is then performed 6 times with breaks in between. Each group's matching costumes are part of the show. During the sixth round, onlookers can step in and dance, and members of the groups will show you the moves. A contest with children's and adult divisions names the top groups, who are honored right there on the street. The festival is run by the Matsumoto Bonbon executive committee.
