About

Nagano City's summer festival was started in 1971 by the Nagano Junior Chamber together with the city and the chamber of commerce, with the aim of bringing all residents together in shared fun. Opening the streets to mass dancing from the very first year made it a pioneer among citizens' festivals in Japan. It is also a fire festival, receiving the eternal flame from the main hall of Zenkoji Temple. At its core is the traditional Binzuru dance, and in the evening groups from companies, schools and organizations dance their way along Chuo-dori and other streets. In 2026, its 56th edition added a daytime program for children, with working-vehicle displays, a water slide and pools on Showa-dori, go-karts on Chuo-dori and a paper-cutting workshop. Roads in the city center are closed on the day.
