About
Yasaka Shrine in Shishikui, Kaiyo, and the streets around it host this summer festival in two parts, the eve and the main day. From evening on the eve, stalls offer takoyaki, lottery games and more, while a danjiri float and bamboo lanterns glow in the dark, and roughly 400 fireworks are sent up as an offering. The main day starts with prayers for road and sea safety, family well-being and protection from illness. Following the formal Gion festival rite, the Noh preservation society presents a lion dance, Yatsuhashi and Sakiyari inside the shrine, then the mikoshi travels from the shrine to the beach in the shinkosai procession. A rice-cake scramble ends the festival. Watching is free, and the shrine is a short walk from the Asa Kaigan Railway station.
