About

Every July 17, Tsurugisan Hongu, the shrine on top of Mt. Tsurugi, western Japan's second-highest mountain, holds its summer grand festival, regarded as the signal that summer has come to the mountain. Many local people join in as a mikoshi is carried along steep trails, and rice cakes are thrown to the crowd. The venue is Hozoishi Shrine in Koyadaira, Mima City. Without a car, ride the JR Tokushima Line to Anabuki Station, take the Anabuki–Koyadaira connecting bus to its last stop, and then hike about 150 minutes. Come equipped for a proper mountain climb. Inquiries go to the Inbe Culture Institute.
