About

Tanabata is a fixture of summer in Fussa. The main sight is the bamboo decorations lining the streets, with a folk dance parade weaving between them and the whole area buzzing with energy. A Tanabata Orihime contest is also held. Along Sakae-dori, about 85 stalls run by residents serve local favorites such as the "Fussa Dog." The festival dates back to July 6, 1951, when the Chuo merchants' association in front of Fussa Station first held it. The idea came from Sendai: a Fussa town official of the day was moved by how Sendai's shopkeepers, even with the city burned flat by air raids, stood tall bamboo in front of their shops to celebrate Tanabata.
