About
Koenji in Tokyo has carried on Tokushima's traditional Awa Odori for decades, and the 2026 festival was the sixty-seventh. The dancing takes place on the shopping streets around JR Koenji Station and Shin-Koenji Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, and along Konan-dori. Troupes called "ren" perform at nine dance areas, including the Chuo, Pal and Junjo stages. In 2026, 166 troupes in total appeared over two days, and the crowd reached 950,000. Dancing runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and traffic is restricted across a wide area nearby. The festival is organized by an executive committee and the Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori Promotion Association, co-hosted by Suginami City, with many local shopping streets cooperating.
