About
Hachioji's summer festival is considered one of the best float festivals in the Kanto region, and in 2026 it drew 770,000 people over three days. The stars are 19 floats decorated with fine carvings, which glow in the dark during the night procession and look completely different from how they do by day. Lion dances handed down at local shrines and designated intangible folk cultural properties by the city, the Kanto taiko drum battle booming into the summer sky, and a folk dance procession of yukata-clad dancers filling the Koshu Kaido add up to a full serving of Hachioji tradition. The festival is also recognized as a component of a Japan Heritage designation. On extremely hot days, events may be cancelled or their times changed.
