About
Asakusa sees out the summer with this samba parade contest. Since its start in 1981 it has been backed by the people of Asakusa, who love a good party. Teams that have modeled themselves on Rio de Janeiro's carnival have raised the standard so far that it is called the largest carnival in the Northern Hemisphere, and around 500,000 people now come to watch each year. Blazing bateria percussion, dancers moving with their whole bodies, carnival songs and glittering alegoria floats move through Asakusa to the samba beat. Spectators watch standing from inside the barriers; drones, selfie sticks, monopods, tripods and chairs are not allowed.
