About
This two-day festival in the Okinami district of Anamizu, on the Noto Peninsula, is a long-standing prayer for safe seas and plentiful fish. The stars are kiriko, the huge lanterns carried at festivals all over Noto. On the first day five of them make their way through the streets toward Ebisu Shrine, accompanied by the clang of bells and the beat of drums. The second day is the one to see: the bearers wade into the sea with the lanterns and shake them violently amid the waves. A kiriko thrashing about in the water under a clear sky is a sight you won't easily find anywhere else.
